The first cast of the day
This morning I arrived at school at 6:30am. I’m not crazy – I went fishing. On our campus, we have two glorious ponds that suffer from very little fishing pressure. Here is the scene:
I arrive with the dew still fresh on the ground. The only sounds are fish attacking the water bugs that are near the banks. Visually, it’s stunning. A misty fog lays across the pond like fresh white sheets on a bed. As the sun rises, the fog gradually burns away and the pond begins to wake up. More fish are attacking and having breakfast. The newest sounds are the sounds of our football team practicing. Whistles, coaches yelling, pads hitting. Another set of beautiful sounds to a man in September. As I tie on my first lure, I savor the moment of the first cast. There is nothing like it. It is equal to a golfer hitting the first ball of the day and watching the ball make the first trail in the dew on the fairway. The sound of the first lure breaking the water and watching the ripple disappear is heavenly. You almost forget that you are going to battle with an enemy you cannot see – the largemouth bass. I didn’t catch anything other than two sticks and some leaves, but, fishing is not always about catching fish. To enjoy a moment like this is rare. It’s golden. I enjoyed being out in nature. I enjoyed looking at the animal tracks that were left by raccoons and deer the night before. What a great way to start off my morning. Communing with God in the midst of His creation. Savoring the fact that as beautiful as the surroundings were, I was more important to the One who created this beauty. He wasn’t concerned with creation. He was concerned with me. Our conversation was great. I’m definitely doing this again.
